Varnish/Laminating Adhesive Solutions

Apollo Colours produces a wide range of varnishes (laminating adhesives) and primers. All being long established market leaders for plastic card manufacturers worldwide.

S2871 Laminating Varnish

  • Designed for the lamination of PVC cards
  • Dries extremely fast to a fine matt finish
  • Normally printed directly on top of any dry offset litho or screen ink before lamination
  • Can be applied by roller coating
  • Functions as a Primer coat on many types of PVC where its matt finish gives a superior surface for offset litho inks to print onto and improving the adhesion of the offset litho to the PVC and/or ink
  • Has been used for laminating PETG and Press Polishing Varnish over offset litho printed PVC

S1942 Laminating Varnish

  • Designed  to improve the adhesion of offset litho inks to PVC overlay materials for the production  of credit cards
  • Dries to a semi gloss finish
  • Suitable for use over conventional or UV drying litho inks
  • Normal method of use – print directly onto the dry litho ink, before lamination
  • Can be screen printed or roller coated

S9258 Highbond Laminating Varnish

  • Developed for the lamination of PVC/Polyester combination cards
  • Combinations of most types of PVC and Polyester can be laminated using this varnish. (Many Polyester films are pre-coated so pretesting is essential, before production.)
  • Increases adhesion to litho inks – ideal when encountering more difficult substrates such as Polyester and PETG
  • Can be used as an adhesive and primer

S4684 Water Based Laminating Varnish

  • Designed to be used with Apollo offset inks, for PVC lamination
  • Can be screen printed or roller coated
  • Designed to be used with Apollo offset inks
  • May also be used with other litho inks, especially UV drying offset inks

S32380 Water Based Laminating Varnish

  • Can be used as primer and adhesive
  • Designed to be used with Apollo offset inks, for PVC lamination
  • May also be used with other litho inks, especially UV drying offset inks, where its laminating qualities give very good results
  • We also  provide a roller coating version known as S32424

S33871 Water Based Laminating Varnish

  • Can be used as primer and adhesive
  • Designed to be used with Apollo offset inks, for PVC lamination
  • May also be used with other litho inks, especially UV drying offset inks
  • Formulated as a water based alternative to S2871 range of transparent colours which block I.R. light allowing ATM Machines to recognize transparent cards

S4767 Press Polishing Varnish

  • Developed to overcome the problems of press polished litho printed sheets sticking together when stacked after removal from the laminator
  • Can be screen printed or roller coated
  • Applied directly on top of the dry litho ink, after drying the sheets may be press polished.

S7176 Anti-Static Press Polishing Varnish

  • Developed to overcome the problems of press polished sheets retaining high levels of static electricity after removal from the laminator. (High static electricity levels can cause problems with CHIP CARDS.)
  • Removes all unwanted static
  • Can be screen printed or roller coated
  • Applied directly on top of the dry ink for press polishing, or onto the overlay for before lamination
  • Varnish must be on the outside face of the overlay for the varnish to be effective. (When dried, the sheets are press polished.)

Laminating Mixing Varnishes

These varnishes are used for in-house mixing:

1. S6910 – a clear mixing screen printing varnish used to mix both Visa and Mastercard background golds. S6910 is the equivalent to ‘Bronze Vehicle’ mentioned in the Visa specification. To obtain the correct shade the visa pearl power (Lustepak) should be mixed to the formula given by Visa, with the correct amount of S6910. It is recommended that mechanical mixing should be used to ensure the best results.

2. S9173 – equivalent to ‘mixing clear’ mentioned in the Visa specification. To obtain the correct shade the Visa pearl powder (Lustepak) should be mixed to the formula given by Visa, with the correct amount of S9173. It is recommended that mechanical mixing should be used to ensure the best results. S9173 should be used for PEARLS which are used to overprint offset litho inks.

3. S10840 – mixing varnish is a fast dry version of S6910.

4. S2785 – similar to S6910 but does not have the excellent pigment wetting properties of S6910. S2785 is more suited to mixing with Apollo metallic pastes. It is important that the minimum of pearl powder or silver paste be used, large percentages give low bond strengths.

5. S17153 – Highbond mixing varnish is available where maximum bond strengths are required when using pearl pigments.

THESE VARNISHES ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR MIXING WITH BRONZE (GOLD) POWDERS
